Murphy Oil Announces Crude Oil Spill at Meraux Refinery Due to Damage from Hurricane Katrina

EL DORADO, Ark., Sep 04, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE:MUR) said today that damage caused by Hurricane Katrina to a crude oil tank holding 85,000 barrels at its Meraux, Louisiana refinery, located in St. Bernard Parish, resulted in a spill of undetermined quantity, some of which has been contained within refinery boundaries. Repairs to the retaining wall surrounding the tank have been completed. The spill was discovered around 2 pm Saturday afternoon, September 3rd. The National Response Center was notified and the Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency are aware of the situation. Spill responders are on site assessing the situation, however, efforts are hampered by limited accessibility. Much of the area is still flooded and as a result had been previously evacuated.
